Back to my journal

Pen and ink
While waiting for the cable vision man to connect the tv back to cable I did some sketching in my journal.  I have forgotten how much fun it can be to keep a journal and just sketch an object around the house or on the kitchen table.

Pumpkin Patch

Pumpkin Patch
This is a 5x7 gouache painting on card stock.  I am amazed at the versatility of this medium.  It  is great  for studies in composition, color, and texture as a preliminary step for future larger paintings in oil.

The Organics Today Farm

The Organic Today Farm

Fall is here and getting into the spirit of visiting the lovely farms on Long Island. This is a cute little family owned organic farm.  I was there last week and did a painting of the pumpkin patch.  This is an entry into my journal.  It is time to bring it home and start sketching in my journal.   Happy Painting Everyone.

Back to my journal

Every once in awhile I go through these artist slumps.  I am sure you can all relate to these empty moments when nothing seems to appeal to my artist eye.

Well getting back to my journal is exactly the medicine needed to get the artistic  juices flowing again.  Sometimes it's the little things in life that calls to us, Happy Painting everyone.  Oh, enjoy the lovely weekend.

Gouache studies

Still life study in gouache

I became very interested in gouache, in the last few weeks.  With all my researching and inquires made to fellow bloggers.  I purchased a set of Holbein artist gouache which I received  today.  It's a challenging medium, like anything that is new, it's takes some time to understand .  So it's a process.  My first is a quickie done this morning.  I wanted to achieve a watercolor look.  And that's what so great about this medium, it can be made to look like a watercolor painting or more opaque such as an oil.  So hence, my fascination in learning all I can.  I also have a Winsor Newton Designer gouache set on it' way.  So there you have it, happy painting everyone.

Fire Island Lighthouse

Fire Island Lighthouse sketch

Did this sketch last week.  Thinking of possibly an oil.  Also trying out a new template for my watercolor journal.  Very confusing.  It is difficult to sign in, I will leave my original blog alone until I get the hang of this template.  Happy painting everyone.

Garage Sale Find

Last Sunday, after having a wonderful day in Northport, I found this lovely coffee set at a garage sale .  It was the ending of one of those perfect days.  Can't wait to do a still life with one of these pieces , perhaps in oil or acrylic.  Happy Painting to all.

Pen and ink studies

Two studies, the first, once again Stony Brook Harbor.  Mike and I went there on Sunday.  What I loved was the low tide and everything was back lit, so it was blinding.  I used my Kuretake letter pen, with sepia ink and waterbrush.

The second my little brown tea pot, always a fun subject.  Happy Painting everyone.

Let It Be

Let It Be
After struggling all morning with a still life in acrylic it was time to play with watercolor.  Let me just say what it is that I love about this medium.  No Control, just let it be and do it's own thing.  It never ceases to amaze me what happens when you let the paint flow without restrictions from the artist. Happy Painting everyone.

New toys and paper and paint test

Last week my new art supplies arrived.  The Schminke pan paint box, got a great bargin and to my surprise the company included the 300lb. watercolor block.  I also got my new books.  Capturing the Moment in Oils by David Curtis, love his work, he also is a great watercolorist.

I experimented with  the paper and paint, still have to practice. They were meant for journaling and outdoor painting so I am sure they will do.

Frank F. Penney Boat Builders

Mike and I went to the Sayville Marina.  I did this pen and ink and watercolor sketch sitting in the back seat of my car. Will probably go back many more times. There is a method to my madness, in time my goal is to paint large scale paintings from my sketches.

Watercolor workshop

On Wednesdays a group of us meet at the Bayshore Library.  It's a watercolor workshop and there is usually a still life set up, but we can paint whatever we choose to work on, great fun.  These are my studies from Wednesday.

Recent work

I have been busy actually working with other artist this week.  It seems we all have cabin fever, spring fever all in one week.  That has been our weather.  One day snow almost 5inches and 2 days later spring like temps in the 50's.  We certainly do get a mixed bag of weather conditions on Long Island.

These are some of the work I have been doing.  Of course Millers Pond in the sepia ink was lots of fun, but I even managed a little girls sketch in sepia.
Happy painting and sketching everyone.
