December

Pears, watercolor on 5x7 hot pressed paper

Getting so close to Christmas, just doing some light watercolor
studies.  Life has a way of distracting me from my art.
Or maybe just feeling a bit lazy.  I will try to post more before
the end of the year.  In the meantime Happy Painting everyon.

Let It Snow

Pen and ink study
quick study
Let it snow, wip
Snow Day

On Tuesday I returned to the art group at the Smithtown Library.  It was
great fun working with artist friends.  We all did our own thing
using my ipad, I worked from photos in Wet Canvas.

Waiting for the snow to return it is wonderful that we have
access to various subject and scenes from Wet Canvas.
I try not to copy the photo , just use the photos to jump start
my own creativity.  Great fun.  Happy Painting everyone.

AH HA! I've Got It!

AH HA moment

After years of trying the Ron Ranson technique with the Hake brush, finally, I understand
how important the paper is to achieve this particular technique.  Not that I will
do many of my paintings like this, but it works.  So therefore, I will do a few
watercolor studies in my folded journal while I wait to order the proper paper.
Blydenburg Park
watercolor

This little 5x7 watercolor study was done in 2012, I was fascinated with the reflections
in the water.

Variety

My collection
Port Jeff Chamber of Commerce building
neighbors house

Trying to add a little more variety to my work.  Sketching helps to improve
my drawing and of course will give me more freedom of expression
in my oil landscape scenes.  Also want to start adding people in my paintings.

Happy Painting everyone.

Port Jeff Today

Port Jeff Today

Do you know when something hits the spot, well today Port Jeff was that for me.
Mike, Mo, and me we went to Port Jefferson.  I sat and sketched from the dock.
Being so bored with the usual, this is such a wonderful experience, different not only in subject
but using tools that are challenging.  Holding a brush and painting in oils, is by no means
easy, all mediums have their pros and cons.  But sketching is so very important to aid in my oils
as well.  In other words, he can't hurt.  So that being said. I say, Happy Painting everyone.

People, places and things, today

Went to the Bayard Cutting Arboretum today, wanted to focus on sketching
the main house and people.   Oh such high hopes, it aint easy!  It's something I do hope to
accomplish with lots of practice.  I do love a challenge.
Happy Painting Everyone.

People, Place, and things

Since I started with sketching with my new pen it has opened a new world
to me.  I may never travel to faraway places.  So thanks to Wet Canvas
and the use of the photo reference library.
Until I get the confidence to go out and sketch publicly in the local towns
and villages here on Long Island.  I will just get use to practicing from
these photos.

Happy Painting everyone.

50 Shades of Green

50 shades of green
wc

Came up with the crazy idea of starting a challenge of my own, missed the September challenge.
Thought it would be fun to do 50 shades of green.  Green is such a difficult color
to get excited about, and yet it is everywhere during the summer.  Now that the
Fall is here, there is a lovely mixture of red and green and etc.  My hydrangea's especially,
love when they turn color.
I also started one in oil.  Still on the easel.  Happy Painting everyone.

My little folded journal

My folded little journal
Actually this is more about learning to use my Kodak digital camera, had it for years.  Just discovered I like the colors taken with this camera more than my Sony.  Now it's a matter of uploading and cropping for my blog.  I  will have to read the guide. But I do think the colors are so much more accurate.  Until tomorrow, wish me luck.  Happy painting everyone.

Today's studies

studying different techniques in watercolor
Today I have been practicing various techniques in watercolor.  I have chose the same scenes, two locations that we have painted during last summer.  Having a great deal of trouble using the masking fluid, and it's application.  It's all so challenging but lots of fun.  Happy Painting everyone.

Frank Ward Melville Park

Frank Ward Melville Park
I have been trying to keep up with my journal entries in between painting in oil. When there isn't enough time in the course of a day to paint, these journal sketches are a great way to sooth the artist soul. I am sure all of you feel the same, when a day goes by without a pen, pencil or brush in hand, it can make an artist very cranky.  This sketch was done in my Stillman&Birn 140lb. Beta Series sketch book.  Excellent paper for watercolor sketching.
